Where did Mercedes start?

It feels like Mercedes-Benz has been a household name forever, and it’s certainly got a history that stretches beyond the last century; in fact, the origins of Mercedes date back to the 1880s. Co-founders Gottlieb Daimler and Carl Benz were initially competitors, both trying to build a modern alternative to the horse and carriage - respectively, they owned Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft (DMG) and Benz & Cie. 

Emil Jellinek was a European automobile entrepreneur, who had been on the DMG team, and had named the 1901 Mercedes 35 hp after his daughter, Mercedes. This led to the name ‘Mercedes’ being trademarked. 

In the 1920s, high inflation saw the market struggle too much for the two companies to retain their healthy client base, so these former competitors joined forces, forming Daimler-Benz AG in 1926. The first Mercedes-Benz branded vehicles produced in the following months. 

Today, Mercedes-Benz headquarters are in Stuttgart, Germany, and in 2018 they were named ‘the largest brand of premium vehicles in the world’, putting 2.31 million passenger cars out onto the roads in that year alone.
